The Mohawk Tribe :]

The Mohawks were part of the Iroquois Nation. The Mohawks are alson known as Kanien`Kekake which means The People Of The Flint. Which was give to them by the Alogonquin.

The Mohawks lived in what is today Upstate New York and parts of Canada.They were the original people of the New York State but came from the Mohawk Valley, to the southern Quebec and lived in eastern Ontario. The Mohawks lived in longhouses, thats what they used for shelters. They made it in an environment that was surrounded by lakes, rivers, and forests. A longhouse could be up to 200 feet long. Their longhouse was made out of tree bark, logs, frams that would be convered in tree bark. One longhouse could hold up to 16 families or 100 people. Each family would have a living space of their own.

Inside of the longhouses, there would be fireplaces in the middle about 20 feet away. On each side of the longhouses there would be a shelf that was about 2 feet high above the ground. It was almost high enough to let people sleep or sit on it confortably. The lower part was a foot off the ground, to protect the people from dampness from the floor. Also, above each door of any longhouse, there would be a carved or painted symbol. The carved or painted symbol would represent the clan of people who lived inside of the longhouse .


The Mohawk Tribe and other Iroquois Tribes were mostly known for thier art work. The one they were mostly known for was their mask carving. Mask Carving is a special type of art to them. Its sacred to them because it forms that outsiders are not aloowed to view their masks, that they created . Another type of art they created is beadwork .

They also did porcupine quillwork . The beadwork and porcupine quillwork were the most common . The Mohawks also crafted Wampum . They made it out of purple shell beads . The Wampum beads used to be traded. But, they were mostly important as an art material .

Most of the Iroquois are the same . They share a couple of things in common . They had six tribes they were The Mohawks, The Oneida, The Onodaga, The Seneca, The Tuscaroras , and The Cayuga .
